Know Your Neighbourhood – Community Wall Hanging Project, Group 1, Starts Friday 12th September (4 Weeks), 10am – 2pm

🎨 Know Your Neighbourhood Community Project –  Group 1

A Mental Health–Friendly Creative Community Project in Doncaster

We are so proud to launch the Know Your Neighbourhood Community Project – Round 1Group 1 proudly funded by Arts Council England, the UK Government, and Know Your Neighbourhood (KYN).

This project is about much more than fabric and stitching – it’s about people, wellbeing, and connection. We know that many in our community face social isolation, poor mental health, and financial barriers that can make it hard to access new opportunities. That’s why this project has been designed as a free, friendly, and creative space where everyone is welcome.

It’s a chance to enjoy something new, build friendships, and boost wellbeing – like a weekly hangout with lovely people, all working together towards a shared goal.

Together, we’ll create a beautiful 9-block quilted wall hanging. Each volunteer will design a fabric panel inspired by something meaningful to them – whether that’s animals, nature, sport, shopping, insects, family, or anything that sparks joy and imagination. Your ideas will then be put down onto fabric, to create a collaborative wall hanging filled with all your lovely ideas.

No experience is needed at all – just bring your imagination. We’ll provide everything else: materials, tools, refreshments, and lots of encouragement.

Alongside your panel, you’ll also have the chance to record your story – sharing what inspired your design. These recordings will be linked to the finished wall hanging through a QR code, so when it’s displayed at local events and community venues, people can scan, listen, and connect with your story.

Please Note: only dates in orange are available to book, once date is selected it will turn green.

How the Project Works

  • This is a 12-week project.

  • The project runs in groups. There are 6 groups in total, each meeting once a week for 4 weeks.

  • Two groups run at the same time:
    Group 1 meets on Fridays
    – Group 2 meets on Tuesdays

  • Each group is separate.

  • After the first two groups (group 1 & 2) finish their 4 weeks, the next two groups start (group 3 & 4), followed by the final two groups (group 5 & 6) after that.

  • What you’ll do: Each group will design and create fabric panels. These panels will then be combined with others to create the final community wall hangings.

  • This is not a full quilting course – the focus is on panel building, creativity, and sharing your story.

🧵 What to Expect

This 4-week project is designed to be relaxed, welcoming, and accessible for everyone.

  • Week 1: A friendly brainstorming session to share ideas, meet others, and plan your panel

  • Weeks 2–4: Your ideas will then be put down onto fabric, to create a collaborative wall hanging filled with all your lovely ideas

  • Record your personal story in your own words

  • Enjoy refreshments, laughter, and supportive conversation each week

  • Become part of a collaborative artwork that will remain in our community for years to come
